What To Expect
Early rise and leave for CAMELTHORN KALAHARI LODGE .Set between two red dunes littered with Camelthorn trees is the nearby Camelthorn Kalahari Lodge. Best suited to the young adult traveller, this lodge offers rondavel style lodgings which are also equipped all the comfortable trappings available in the other lodges (with the exception of the outside showers). The décor in each of the 12 rooms at this lodge is inspired by the local San people and each room has a patio from which the resplendent views of the Kalahari can be savoured.
We invite you to have a drink in our garden while watching the Springbok graze on the grass. The name “Hammerstein” was given to the farm by the German Survey company in colonial times.
Hammerstein started with Swakara (Karakul) farming and in 1992 the lodge was built. We started as a small guest house with only 5 rooms, at the moment we’ve expanded to 56 rooms. The lodge is owned by the Porteus family, Anton and Gerty, their son Matthew and daughter Henreza. Hammerstein is situated between Swakopmund and Lüderitz, nestled between the Nubib and Tsaris mountains. It is an ideal stopover for travellers to the south of Namibia. It is in close proximity to the beautiful Sossusvlei region and only 60km from Sesriem.
To meet the carnivore friends, one of our guides will escort you to meet them. All the animals at the facility have been placed in our care due to unavoidable circumstances. Most of them were caught by farmers as problem animals catching livestock. Once caught, the farmers have two choices, they either have the animal put down, or they can send them to a facility where they can be kept and cared for, for the rest of their natural lives. Some of the animals were captured as baby animals and then brought to us when the owners realized they cannot care for an animal that in essence will always remain a wild predator. Among the furry friends you will meet are caracals, cheetah, leopard and brown hyena. Please contact us for more information and rates..
Perched on the edge of the Gamsberg pass, in the scenic surroundings of the Hakos Mountains, lies the comfortable farm. Hakos offers: • Guided star tours after dinner. The best period is 4 days after full moon until 4 days after new moon (moon free nights) • Gamsberg tours, 3rd highest mountain in Namibia with the endemic Euryops walterorum (minimum 6 hours) • Quivertree forest • Amateur astronomical observatory.
14 guest rooms with WC and shower are ready for you. We offer breakfast and one meal or full board in a farm atmosphere, relaxed evenings at the fireside or camping with campfire and braaivleis (BBQ) whilst enjoying the unique setting of the Hakos mountains.
The Hakos mountain range soars at a hight of 2000m above the farm. The steep folded mountains and the desert terrain offer unrivalled opportunities for excursions. Like almost everywhere else in Namibia, you will find untouched nature on the farm. Millions of years of the earth’s history and geomorphology are presented for the geologist in this area of the escarpment on the edge of the desert…
From early morning after breakfast, many adventures await to be enjoyed:
